WisEye Morning Minute: 2024 State of the Judiciary Address

Wisconsin Chief Justice Annette Ziegler delivered her annual State of the Judiciary calling on improved access to justice, including steps to address lawyer shortages, particularly in rural areas. Justice Ziegler highlighted that Wisconsin is not alone in facing challenges caused by lawyer shortages. She said that makes it difficult to find attorneys who can be appointed to handle cases through the State Public Defender Office, but emphasized the importance of creating programs and incentives to ensure access to legal representation across the entire state. “When we cannot provide members of the public who are exercising their constitutional right to be represented by counsel with an attorney, access to justice is seriously compromised,” she said.
