radial engine and rotary engines
[edit]Hi Albert, thanks for the note.
- There are two similiar engine designs;
- en:Radial engines (my illustration), common on older aircraft, cylinders are stationary, crankshaft rotates.
- en:Rotary piston engines, which are the kind you are talking about. Used on some older motorcycles and aircraft, crankshaft is stationary, cylinders rotate --Duk 06:05, 22 May 2005 (UTC)

Canada Copyright
[edit]Hi - please have a look at Commons:Village_pump#image_on_wikimedia_commons, explicitly_labeled_as_copyrighted?, I replied to you there. You are kind of right in saying the in canada copyright expires after 50 years - but its 50 years after the death of the author. -- Duesentrieb 02:49, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
re: proposal for original data
[edit]Hi. I know no one has responded to this on the VP, I've been pondering about it for a while though. Wouldn't the .orig files still be subject to security nasties? How can we solve that problem? pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:25, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- This proposal is how we solve the problem. The problem is that a careless user might click on a Wikipedia link and instantly get a computer infection of some sort. Worse yet, if we care, is that some users run crummy old Microsoft junk that can get infected just by browsing to the wrong page. The .orig file extension stops this. The browser will no longer recognize the file. The only option is to save the file. If you then delibrately rename the file and execute it, you're chosing to take a risk. That's OK. It's not so OK when there isn't a delibrate choice being made. AlbertCahalan 07:17, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- If you then delibrately rename the file and execute it, you're chosing to take a risk. That's OK. Well, I disagree with you there. :) Users would expect safe files. We'd have to manually check them all or something equally unlikely. So, I think this idea needs a bit more work. --pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:05, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- When I say "rename", I mean you have to change the file extension. Windows will even warn about doing so, and it hides the file extensions by default. So this is a somewhat advanced operation that can not be accidentally performed by browsing a wiki. Note that we have this problem today. I can save a Windows EXE file as setup.exe.ogg and tell people to run it after renaming it. So the feature is unofficially available and isn't thought to be causing problems. I merely propose to reserve a special file extension to make this ability explicit. AlbertCahalan 15:54, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:24, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called AlbertCahalan. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name AlbertCahalan~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
