The freshly made bread has been popping out of the oven every four hours for more than 35 years, which Milio’s boasts is the “secret sauce that isn’t sauce at all.” Popular Milio’s sandwiches are Wisconsin born and “bread” — all the way.
And this month, locals are invited to bite down and indulge in focaccia when the bread takes center stage with the Italian Trio, a lineup of focaccia sandwiches available for a limited time.
Let’s take a closer bite, ahem, look.
Garden Fresco
Fresh and flavorful, the Garden Fresco is a delight of creamy fresh mozzarella, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato and alfalfa sprouts. All these delicious ingredients are perfectly complemented by Italian dressing and basil pesto, layered on fresh-baked focaccia bread. This sandwich is a garden-fresh bite of heaven.

Sicilian Ham and Salami
Go bold. The Sicilian Ham and Salami is a must-try. Savor the rich tastes of Italian capicola ham and Genoa salami, paired with fresh mozzarella, red-ripe tomato, lettuce and onion. Finished with Italian dressing and basil pesto on fresh-baked focaccia bread, this sandwich delivers.
Tuscan Turkey
Go traditional with the Tuscan Turkey. The savory roasted turkey, fresh mozzarella, tomato and crisp lettuce pairs nicely with tangy Italian dressing and flavorful basil pesto. Order this on your next lunch break.
Along with the Italian Trio, alternative bread choices to try include French and wheat rolls and jalapeno and garlic herb wraps. A variety of snacks and desserts are available to pair with the sandwiches. Sandwich, pickle and cookie platters are available through Milio’s catering service, too.
Milio’s also offers vegetarian and gluten-free options for all its sandwiches. While the Veggie Delite (No. 6 on the menu) is a vegetarian sandwich, customers can customize any sandwich as vegetarian by holding the meat. The same with gluten-free options — ask to have any sandwich served on crisp iceberg lettuce wraps.
The company, whose signature bread first rolled off the line in 1989 at the sandwich shop’s first location in the heart of the University of Wisconsin – Madison campus, was initially called Big Mike’s Super Subs. Sandwich loyalty spread and, even today, all of the company’s franchise owners have been with Milio’s for more than 10 years, with some employees having been with the company for over 20 years.
Mangia! You can order on-site or online at any of the 19 Milio’s located throughout Madison, Minneapolis and Cedar Rapids. Foodies can try one or all three and satiate their focaccia cravings.
